Educators in Ogun State have formally requested that Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, an APC governorship hopeful, address several key issues, most notably the elimination of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). During an interactive forum at Ake Palace Ground, Abeokuta, representatives from various education unions urged the senator to prioritize the implementation of the National Minimum Wage and the Teachers’ Peculiar Salary Structure alongside other benefit packages.
While acknowledging Senator Adeola’s previous contributions—such as infrastructure projects, laptop distributions, and the payment of WASSCE fees for thousands of students—union leaders emphasized that future education reforms must focus on teacher morale. Felix Agbesanwa of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools suggested that the current pension system should either be scrapped entirely or reformed to ensure timely and fair retirement payments. Additional demands included the settlement of long-standing salary arrears, an increase in various allowances, and the creation of a Teachers’ Advisory Council.
Senator Adeola responded positively to the concerns, promising to review the pension scheme options thoroughly and committing to the establishment of the advisory council. He also pledged to shorten the Ogun Teach internship duration and integrate the federal government’s retirement age policy for teachers. Adeola highlighted his past support for the sector, which includes the construction of dozens of classroom blocks, the facilitation of thousands of scholarships, and the distribution of educational resources, affirming his belief that well-supported educators are essential for regional development.
