Mrs. Oluwaseun Sodiya, a vital member of the Penpushing Media anniversary planning committee, lost her life alongside her daughter when a two-storey building collapsed in Ajuwon, Ogun State. The incident took place on Monday at OGS Bus Stop on Baale Road, located in a community bordering Lagos. The structure served as both commercial and residential space.
Sodiya, a Senior Nursing Sister employed by the Ogun State Hospitals Management Board, attempted to escape the building with her two children after observing structural warning signs. While her son managed to flee, both Sodiya and her daughter were trapped under the debris. Their remains were later recovered and moved to the General Hospital in Ifo. The family has scheduled their burial for Friday.
The Penpushing Media leadership expressed profound grief over the loss, with Editorial Board Chairperson Deaconess Olufunke Fadugba praising Sodiya as a dedicated and proactive team member. Governor Dapo Abiodun has since initiated a comprehensive investigation into the disaster. While heavy rainfall occurred prior to the collapse, officials stated that only rigorous forensic and structural analysis would pinpoint the exact cause, such as potential material defects or foundation issues. The government has vowed to prosecute anyone found to have violated building safety standards.
