The House of Representatives has urged the Nigerian government to intensify diplomatic pressure on South Africa in response to recent xenophobic violence that has resulted in the deaths of Nigerian nationals. This directive was issued following a motion presented by Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, who serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Navy.
Gagdi highlighted the alarming rise in incidents involving the destruction of property, unlawful detentions, and fatalities affecting Nigerians and other Africans. He emphasized that Nigeria’s historic support for South Africa during the anti-apartheid era should be met with mutual respect and peaceful cooperation. In response, the House observed a moment of silence for the victims and formally requested that the South African High Commissioner be summoned for an explanation.
The lawmakers are demanding an independent, thorough investigation into these deaths to ensure justice is served. They also requested that the federal government secure compensation for those whose livelihoods have been destroyed. Furthermore, the House suggested involving international bodies like the African Union and the United Nations to bolster protections for migrants. To address the situation systematically, an ad hoc committee has been formed to consult with South African officials and relevant stakeholders, with a mandate to provide a comprehensive report within three weeks.
