The Nigerian government is reaching out to Israel for technical assistance in border security to mitigate cross-border illegal activities. This initiative was announced by Dr. Magnus Eze, the aide to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, following a meeting in Abuja between Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and outgoing Israeli Ambassador Michael Freeman.
Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu highlighted that the current administration considers security essential for national growth. She emphasized the importance of Israeli partnership in areas such as counter-terrorism, intelligence, and training for security personnel. The minister also noted that the recent successful rescue of kidnapped students in Oriire is a significant milestone in local security operations.
Beyond defense, the government intends to foster links between Nigerian startups and Israeli tech firms to spur economic progress. There is also a specific interest in utilizing Israeli expertise for agricultural development and water resource management. Ambassador Freeman expressed Israel’s willingness to deepen these ties, noting that current bilateral trade, valued at approximately $200 million, should be significantly expanded in the future.
