The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is currently under fire as stakeholders raise serious concerns regarding the upcoming elective congress scheduled for September 26. Critics, including former NFF Secretary General Sani Toro, argue that the election result is already predetermined to favor the incumbent board members who are pushing for continuity. Edema Fuludu and Rumson Victor Baribote have both expressed skepticism about the process, citing a lack of a fair playing field for potential candidates.
A core issue identified by Baribote is the structural imbalance in the NFF voting system. Currently, state Football Association chairmen hold the vast majority of voting rights, effectively marginalizing key stakeholders like players, coaches, and referees. Baribote emphasized that this lopsided structure allows those who are not active participants in the sport to dictate its leadership, which he views as a form of institutionalized illegality.
Furthermore, the legitimacy of the current administration has been challenged in court. Baribote pointed to a 2024 Court of Appeal ruling that nullified the election of the current board, asserting that their continued tenure is in direct defiance of judicial orders. Despite ongoing contempt proceedings, the federation is proceeding with new elections.
Stakeholders like Fuludu and Toro believe that meaningful change in Nigerian football will only occur if the government intervenes to reform the NFF statutes. They argue that correcting the voting imbalance is essential for ensuring that competent individuals, rather than those entrenched in the current system, can lead the federation forward. Until such reforms are implemented, many remain doubtful that any genuine progress will be achieved.
