Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains committed to visiting New York City for the UN General Assembly later this year, dismissing recent threats of arrest from Mayor Zohran Mamdani. During a Fox News interview, Netanyahu labeled the mayor’s rhetoric as an attempt to stoke division and hate among the city’s diverse population.
Mayor Mamdani recently retracted his initial promise to arrest Netanyahu upon arrival, admitting that his office lacks the legal jurisdiction to execute an International Criminal Court warrant. Despite this backtrack, Mamdani maintains that the Prime Minister is unwelcome in the city.
Netanyahu highlighted growing safety concerns for Jewish residents in New York, pointing to recent stabbings that authorities have classified as hate crimes. Mamdani, who campaigned on a strong pro-Palestinian platform, continues to label Netanyahu a war criminal, though the Israeli government has consistently dismissed the ICC allegations as illegitimate.
The diplomatic friction stems from the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which began following the Hamas-led attacks on Israel in October 2023. While Mamdani has urged the federal government to intervene regarding the ICC warrant, he acknowledged that his local administration has no power to enforce it.
