The National Population Commission (NPC) has officially rolled out its digital birth and death registration system across Ogun State, promising that every community will be included in the national effort to provide legal identities for all Nigerians. During a press event in Abeokuta on Thursday, Federal Commissioner Dr. Fasuwa Abayomi Johnson confirmed that the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system is now the official standard.
As of July 1, 2026, the VitalReg platform is the primary mechanism for these records, rendering any manual certificates issued after that date invalid. Dr. Johnson explained that the shift away from the traditional paper-based process is essential to fixing systemic gaps that have historically prevented citizens from obtaining legal identity and accessing critical government services. Registration centers are now operational in all Local Government Areas, with plans to extend coverage further.
The digital transition is designed to provide 24/7 online access, increase data precision, and allow for easier integration with other national digital systems. By gathering more accurate data, the government aims to better allocate resources for healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Ogun State NPC Director, Dr. Adenuga Olayinka, echoed these sentiments, labeling the system a key milestone for human development and the protection of basic citizen rights. Both officials urged community leaders, medical institutions, and the media to assist in raising public awareness, particularly in rural locations.
