National Grid Instability Causes Power Blackout in Lagos

A voltage fluctuation on the national grid led to widespread power outages in Lagos on Thursday morning, prompting emergency restoration efforts by TCN and the Ministry of Power.

On Thursday morning, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported a significant failure in the electricity network serving Lagos. The issue originated from a voltage fluctuation across the national grid at 8:19 a.m.

This instability forced the automatic shutdown of various power plants and transmission lines, leaving Lagos and its neighboring regions without electricity. To stop a total system failure, the National Control Centre ordered power producers to lower their output immediately to balance the grid frequency.

Power Minister Joseph Tegbe held an urgent session with TCN and the Nigerian Independent System Operator to organize a rapid recovery plan. Efforts to return power to normal are underway, with the Benin–Egbin 330kV line already back in operation. Technical teams from Benin and Omotoso are currently repairing the Benin–Omotoso 330kV line to finalize the restoration process. The TCN apologized for the service disruption and confirmed that authorities are prioritizing a full return to stable electricity delivery.
