Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has officially stepped in to prosecute a case involving an Abuja fertility doctor, John Abebe, who faces charges of fraud and unauthorized disclosure of patient records. The case, filed under charge number CR/005/2026, also names Joje Abebe Facility Centre Limited and Balikis Bakare as co-defendants.
Authorities allege the group breached the National Health Act of 2014 by exposing the private medical data of Mrs. Mary Manga without her permission. Prosecutors claim that Dr. Abebe compromised confidentiality by including sensitive documents regarding the reproductive health of the patient’s husband in a legal notice, which subsequently reached unauthorized parties and caused significant distress. Furthermore, the doctor is accused of deceiving the complainants between January and May 2025, allegedly obtaining 19 million naira under the false pretense of being an IVF expert. He is also charged with the personal conversion of funds and patient embryos.
Although the Nigeria Police Force initiated the case, the Attorney General recently moved to take control of the legal proceedings. The accused parties maintain their innocence, and Justice A. A. Fashola granted them bail on March 11 while the litigation remains ongoing.
