Nasarawa locals petition President Tinubu after latest farmer murder

Community members in Akum Ward, Nasarawa, are pleading for President Tinubu’s intervention following the murder of a farmer by suspected armed herders.

Locals residing in the Akum Ward of Nasarawa State have requested direct intervention from President Bola Tinubu regarding the death of a young farmer, who was allegedly murdered by armed herders. Community representative Yahaya Kana Ismaila stated the victim was assaulted while traveling back from his fields on Saturday, July 4. This event has deepened the anxiety of citizens who were already forced from their residences due to prior violence.

This specific region previously experienced a wave of fatalities that claimed over 80 lives earlier this year, resulting in widespread displacement. Ismaila noted that those fleeing the initial attacks remain unable to head back home because the area remains unsafe and the perpetrators are still present. He asserted that no suspects have been apprehended for the earlier violence, even though community members have frequently demanded accountability.

Ismaila expressed worry that these continuing assaults could lead to retaliatory violence without immediate government interference. He also criticized the Nasarawa State government for characterizing the previous instability as simple communal fighting, maintaining instead that the incidents were systematic targeted attacks. He urged President Tinubu to boost security presence and guarantee that the culprits are prosecuted. Furthermore, he asked Gaza Gbefwi, the local State House of Assembly representative, to keep highlighting these security issues. Neither the state government nor the security services have provided an official response to the incident.
