The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, is advocating for mediation to stop a potential strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, at Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero, in Kebbi State.
This intervention comes after the local ASUU branch set a two-week deadline, warning of industrial action if their welfare-related grievances remain unaddressed. Previously, it was reported that the union intended to walk off the job if their requirements were not fulfilled within the stipulated timeframe.
Sadiq Zango, the NANS National Vice President for External Affairs, released a statement encouraging the Kebbi State Government, university administration, and union leaders to engage in discussions to protect the academic calendar.
NANS identified key issues causing the tension, such as unpaid earnings, promotion delays, and salary adjustments. The student organization has already initiated contact with the university management, the local union, and state government officials to mediate the disagreement.
The group emphasized that maintaining communication is vital for peace on campus. They cautioned that a strike would severely affect lectures, research, and graduation timelines, ultimately harming the student population. NANS remains hopeful that discussions will yield a positive outcome for the university community.
