A New York federal court handed down a life sentence to Mexican drug kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada on Monday. The 76-year-old was convicted for his leadership role in the Sinaloa cartel, an organization he helped build alongside Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who is currently imprisoned in Colorado.
Zambada was taken into custody at a US airport in July 2024 and entered a guilty plea in August 2025 regarding his management of the criminal enterprise. He alleged that he was deceived by a cartel associate, resulting in his unintentional arrival into American police custody. In a plea deal, prosecutors dropped the possibility of the death penalty.
Judge Brian Cogan issued the life sentence in Brooklyn, confirming there will be no chance for parole. The conviction covers racketeering and managing a major criminal enterprise. US Attorney Joseph Nocella, Jr. noted that Zambada’s decades of illegal activity caused immense harm and resulted in numerous deaths. For years, Zambada was recognized for maintaining a secretive lifestyle, successfully dodging law enforcement and violent rivals alike.
