Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has instructed the leaders of all tertiary institutions in Nigeria to immediately dismiss any student proven to be involved in kidnapping or criminal activities. Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with the leadership of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), the minister emphasized that universities must not serve as incubators for criminal behavior.
Dr. Alausa urged administrators to enhance internal intelligence-gathering capabilities and foster stronger partnerships with the Department of State Service (DSS) and other security branches. He highlighted that while campuses generally remain safe, isolated incidents necessitate a proactive approach to security. The minister noted that he has discussed the Safe Schools Initiative with the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, to bolster protections nationwide.
Reinforcing the government’s stance against ransom payments, Alausa argued that such concessions only empower criminals. He also announced that the 2027 TETFund intervention will prioritize funding for campus security infrastructure, such as perimeter fencing. Additionally, the government intends to expand the Energising Education Programme to improve electricity access at schools through solar and storage solutions.
FULafia Pro-Chancellor, Hon. Lola Fibisola Akande, and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Isa Kida, raised concerns regarding power shortages, hostel deficits, and security risks. The university management confirmed its opposition to paying ransoms and requested further government support for infrastructure development. The minister encouraged the institution to submit formal proposals to address these needs, reaffirming the commitment of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration to academic safety and institutional growth.
