Manchester United is currently in final negotiations to recruit Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans. The club has shifted its focus to the 29-year-old after facing setbacks in securing other midfield targets, including Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes. Sources indicate that a release clause within Tielemans’ existing contract at Villa has facilitated these discussions.
The move comes after Manchester United decided to walk away from a £35m deal for Brazilian international Ederson. Although a transfer was initially agreed upon with Atalanta, concerns raised during a medical examination in England led the club to scrap the move, citing the player’s physical condition. Officials noted that while they remain sympathetic to Ederson, they must prioritize the club’s interests, though the door for a future deal at different terms has not been entirely closed.
Meanwhile, the impending £48m arrival of Chelsea’s Andrey Santos is expected to be finalized this week, independent of the Ederson situation. United, currently relying on Kobbie Mainoo as their primary experienced central midfielder, views Tielemans’ extensive Premier League background as a major asset to their roster.
