Thubelihle Sbonakaliso Mpisi, a South African legal professional, received a life sentence for murdering his girlfriend, Mahlako Malebo Rabalao. Her charred body was located within her Mercedes-Benz in Midrand, Johannesburg, during March 2023.
The South Gauteng High Court convicted Mpisi of murder, damaging property, and obstructing justice. Evidence presented by the prosecution demonstrated that Rabalao was killed prior to the burning of both her remains and vehicle, a tactic used to hide the incident.
Rabalao, a 26-year-old IT expert and mother to a toddler, had recently told loved ones of her intent to leave Mpisi and vacate their home. Authorities utilized mobile data, forensic reports, and witness statements to build a successful case against him.
Following a four-month inquiry, Mpisi was apprehended in KwaZulu-Natal in July 2023. Although he initially performed a public display of mourning on social media following the death, the court delivered a life sentence for his actions on August 4, 2026.
