Funeral Director Jailed for 20 Years After Failing to Bury Remains

Robert Bush has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after police discovered dozens of unburied bodies and unidentified ashes at his funeral home in Hull.

Robert Bush, a former funeral director, has received a 20-year prison sentence for failing to carry out cremations and burials. He also provided grieving families with the remains of strangers. Police discovered 35 bodies and over 100 sets of ashes when they raided Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull in March 2024.

Bush pleaded guilty to 67 charges, which included fraudulent trading, theft from charities, and denying dozens of people proper burials. Hull Crown Court heard that he defrauded nearly 200 families of approximately £500,000 to fund a lifestyle of luxury, holidays, and motorcycle racing. Judge Justice Hilliard noted that Bush showed a lack of remorse, treating both the living and the deceased with profound disrespect.

The conditions inside the funeral home were described as horrific, with decomposing remains and waste found on the premises. Many families have expressed anger at the sentence, feeling it does not account for the emotional devastation caused. Humberside Police described the case as the most complex in their history, impacting hundreds of victims.

In response to the scandal, the government has announced intentions to propose formal regulations for the funeral industry, which currently operates primarily under self-regulation. Health Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the government aims to ensure that families can be certain their loved ones are treated with the respect they deserve.
