The Lagos State Government has launched a new initiative to provide unique identification numbers to every student attending public and private educational institutions. This effort aims to enhance identity registration and refine the management of educational data throughout the state.
This project stems from a partnership between the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) and the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA). The plan was introduced to school administrators and sector representatives during an event in Alausa, Ikeja. LASRRA General Manager, Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola, stated that the agency is collaborating with the OEQA to facilitate a smooth registration process for both school systems. While LASRRA numbers are already standard for public school enrollment, the government seeks to streamline the system using updated technology. Private school students, many of whom are not yet registered, will benefit from mobile, on-site registration sessions conducted by LASRRA and OEQA officials.
Adebiyi-Abiola noted that each registration takes under five minutes. Furthermore, the agency is coordinating with the National Identity Management Commission to help students and faculty obtain their National Identification Numbers. To prepare for the launch, the OEQA, led by Director-General Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, will implement a widespread awareness campaign through radio and television. According to Ogunmuyiwa, this project aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s policy of inter-agency cooperation. The data collected will allow the state to maintain accurate records, monitor student performance, and create better education policies for all learners.
