Kwara Christians Urge APC to Field Christian Governorship Candidate for 2027

A Kwara State Christian group has urged President Tinubu and the APC to nominate a Christian governorship candidate in 2027, citing a need for political equity and data showing broad voter support for competent leaders across religious lines.

The Conglomerate of Kwara State Christian Communities has officially requested that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu support a Christian candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial ticket in the 2027 election. Speaking in Ilorin on Monday, the group emphasized that their push is rooted in the ideals of equity, fairness, and state-wide inclusion.

The organization clarified that this request is not intended to promote religious polarization. Instead, they argued that a balanced political approach would foster unity and prioritize leadership capacity. Rev. Felix Ajide, the group’s convener, noted that the party already possesses experienced Christian members capable of leading the state effectively.

To support their position, the group referenced data from the Africa Polling Institute (API). The survey suggests that a vast majority of Kwarans, regardless of their own faith, are open to electing a competent leader from a different religious background. Specifically, the data indicated that 90 percent of Muslim respondents and 98 percent of Christian respondents would back a qualified candidate from another faith.

The group remains focused on promoting peaceful coexistence and believes that prioritizing competence over religious identity will strengthen the state. They have formally called on President Tinubu to consider these aspirations to ensure that all segments of Kwara society feel a sense of belonging within the APC moving forward.
