Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the NDC, has voiced concern over the increasing criticism aimed at the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). He warned that the current government is fostering an environment that rejects truth and constructive feedback. Obi emphasized that the Catholic Church acts as the nation’s conscience rather than an opposition force, consistently highlighting national crises throughout various political eras.
The former Anambra governor noted that major organizations like the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) share these concerns regarding widespread poverty and insecurity. He urged government officials to welcome honest feedback, noting that such input was vital to his own success while he served as governor. Obi specifically condemned the recent backlash against Cardinal John Onaiyekan for speaking out on national affairs.
Furthermore, Obi dismissed the notion that such critiques are politically motivated, stating that issues like inflation and unemployment affect all citizens regardless of their background. He urged those in power to focus on solving the country’s economic and security challenges instead of targeting religious leaders for speaking on behalf of struggling Nigerians.
