Kenneth Okonkwo named as spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar ahead of 2027 election

Atiku Abubakar has appointed ADC chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson following Okonkwo’s public critique of the party’s 2027 vice-presidential selection process.

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, has officially appointed actor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) figure Kenneth Okonkwo to serve as his spokesperson. This development occurs just weeks after Okonkwo publicly challenged the ADC regarding their selection for a running mate in the 2027 general election.

Okonkwo shared the news on his official X account, thanking Atiku for the opportunity. The former Labour Party spokesperson praised Atiku for his inclusive leadership, highlighting that the politician prefers communication and consensus over punishing those who hold different viewpoints. Okonkwo noted that his recent discussions with Atiku and other ADC leaders successfully addressed specific political concerns regarding the South-East region, even considering the constraints established by the Electoral Act of 2026.

In addition to acknowledging the support of his family and supporters, Okonkwo expressed appreciation to individuals like Kashim Imam and Ekene Onwuka for their roles in organizing party affairs. Previously, Okonkwo had voiced concerns that the ADC’s reported interest in a South-South running mate would exacerbate the historical marginalization of the South-East in national politics, a trend he argues has persisted since 1999.
