In his recent Netflix documentary, Jose Mourinho addressed the 2015 confrontation with Eva Carneiro, who served as Chelsea’s team doctor during his second spell at the club. Mourinho has chosen not to apologize for his actions, even more than a decade later, despite the lasting offense caused to Carneiro. He insisted his outburst was not motivated by sexism, arguing that heated verbal exchanges are a standard aspect of professional football that should not be exaggerated.
Mourinho explained that he views all medical staff equally regardless of gender. He maintained that his frustrations were directed at the game situation, and he believes those ingrained in football culture typically brush off such outbursts quickly. This specific incident took place during a match against Swansea City in the 2015-16 season. After already losing goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to a red card, Mourinho grew enraged when Carneiro and physio Jon Fearn entered the pitch to treat Eden Hazard, temporarily leaving Chelsea with only nine men.
Carneiro accused the manager of gender-based discrimination during his tirade, noting he used a slur against her. The fallout led to Carneiro’s removal from first-team duties and her eventual resignation from the club. She later initiated a tribunal case, alleging both discrimination and unfair dismissal, which resulted in a settlement.
