The Jigawa State Government has officially formed a specialized committee tasked with creating a registration framework for nomadic herders. This measure is intended to foster harmony between agricultural workers and pastoralists throughout the region.
Sagir Musa Ahmad, the Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, shared these details following a State Executive Council gathering. He emphasized that the government aims to guarantee secure and organized livestock movement while boosting local security and public health standards.
This initiative specifically targets herders traveling through Jigawa, particularly those moving back from grazing sites in the Republic of Niger following the rainy season. By documenting these movements, officials believe they can better manage livestock, track health trends, and improve traceability across the industry.
The committee is led by the Secretary to the State Government and includes several high-ranking officials such as the Commissioners for Livestock Development, Justice, Environment, Health, and Local Government, alongside the Special Adviser on Security. The Permanent Secretary of Special Services will act as the board’s secretary.
Ultimately, the government expects the committee’s findings to provide a roadmap for managing transhumance, ensuring rural stability, and supporting the state’s livestock economy.
