The House of Representatives has advocated for a new National Drone Industrialization Policy to improve Nigeria’s domestic manufacturing of defense equipment and bolster efforts against national security threats. Lawmakers emphasized the need for the Federal Government to provide financial backing to local manufacturers such as Beirech UAS, Terra Industries, Elites Group, Pro-force, and the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). This funding, channeled through organizations like the Bank of Industry and DICON, aims to help these firms reach military-grade production standards.
Hon. Ademorin Kuye, who introduced the motion, highlighted that security issues including insurgency, terrorism, and kidnapping are putting immense pressure on the Armed Forces. He noted that while extremist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP are increasingly using drones for attacks, Nigeria has demonstrated potential through local innovations like the Tsaigumi UAV. Kuye argued that with appropriate policy, legislative, and financial support, Nigeria could establish itself as a primary hub for drone technology in Africa.
To achieve this, the House has instructed its committees on Defense, National Security, and Science and Technology to draft a formal policy framework. The plan involves securing technology transfer agreements with international experts and creating dedicated industrial zones for research and maintenance. Furthermore, the legislature aims to revise current procurement and local content laws to offer tax incentives and better intellectual property protections for Nigerian engineers. The committees are required to report back within four weeks.
