Twelve years ago, a young Reuben Ward watched Dan Keatings capture gymnastics gold for Scotland in Glasgow. Even then, the nine-year-old dreamed of one day representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Games, simply hoping to pull on the national vest. At 21, Ward turned that vision into reality, winning the all-around title at the Emirates Arena to the delight of the crowd.
Though raised in Bury by parents from East Kilbride, Ward expressed deep affection for his Scottish roots. Becoming the nation’s third gold medallist of the Games marked a full-circle moment for the athlete. While teammates and observers recognized his potential for a podium finish, Ward exceeded expectations by climbing the rankings during the competition.
After starting seventh following the floor exercise, Ward surged ahead during his strongest event, the pommel horse. He maintained his lead through the rings and vault, eventually securing the gold with a composed performance on the horizontal bar. Coach Jake Seager celebrated the victory moments before it was officially confirmed.
Reflecting on the achievement, Ward admitted he had visualized winning the night before, though the actual experience surpassed his hopes. Having suffered a heartbreak in the team event just days prior, the victory was particularly emotional. Ward remains in contention for additional medals in upcoming events, planning to celebrate with his teammates once his full schedule concludes on Tuesday.
