Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Governor of Ondo State, has sanctioned the distribution of N1.1 billion as a Special Intervention Fund for Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA). This financial package is designed to settle unpaid wages and conclude the current strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
This decision arrived shortly after the student leadership delivered a 72-hour notice to the government, demanding a prompt settlement. Ebenezer Adeniyan, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, confirmed on Tuesday that these funds are designated strictly for clearing salary backlogs.
Governor Aiyedatiwa has instructed the Ministry of Finance and university administrators to expedite the release and allocation of the capital. He urged faculty unions to resume duties immediately, emphasizing that a supported workforce is essential for the institution’s growth and international competitiveness.
The strike, which had reached its 14th day, significantly stalled academic operations. Student leaders, including President Falagbade Greatness, highlighted that the disruption caused considerable anxiety and forced many students to leave the campus. They had previously threatened to take peaceful, democratic measures if the government did not act within their specified timeframe.
