A search is underway in Scotland for four Ugandan boxers who disappeared during the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. Authorities, including Police Scotland and immigration officials, are currently investigating the matter after the athletes failed to board the team’s return flight this past Tuesday.
The missing team members are Angel Katushabe, Nuhu Batte, Ibrahim Khemis, and Emily Nakalema. Reports from the Ugandan outlet NBS Sport indicate that the group intentionally stayed behind with the intention of applying for asylum. An anonymous team member cited a desire for superior training infrastructure and professional prospects as the primary motivation for their decision, asking for understanding from the public.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed they are aware of the situation and are currently collaborating with the Home Office to determine the circumstances of their disappearance. Phil Batty, the CEO of the Commonwealth Games, noted that organizers maintain strict coordination with border agencies to ensure athletes follow immigration protocols. Meanwhile, the Home Office has indicated that it will address any potential violations of law to maintain the integrity of the national immigration system.
