David Warner, who represented Australia in 383 international matches from 2009 to 2024, has officially entered a guilty plea for drink driving. The charge followed a random breath test conducted in Sydney during April. The admission was widely anticipated after his legal representative, Bobby Hill, indicated in May that the cricketer acknowledged his actions were both reckless and foolish.
During a prior hearing, Hill explained that Warner had consumed three glasses of wine at a friend’s residence on Easter Sunday before choosing to operate his vehicle. The lawyer emphasized that Warner recognized the error in judgment, noting that he should have utilized a rideshare service instead.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for 18 August. Warner faces significant penalties, including a mandatory driving ban of at least six months, a potential fine reaching A$2,200, and a maximum prison sentence of nine months. Warner, who concluded his international career in 2024, currently serves as a captain for the Sydney Thunder and the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League.
Following the initial charges, Cricket NSW chief executive Lee Germon stated that the organization viewed the allegations as very serious and expressed concern over the situation, reiterating their commitment to road safety advocacy.
