In the Abuja Federal High Court, prosecutors are pushing for the inclusion of statements given by six men charged with attempting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration. During a trial-within-trial aimed at verifying whether these confessions were made freely, a witness identified as DDD testified that the suspects were neither coerced nor mistreated during their interviews.
Led by senior counsel Rotimi Oyedepo, the witness specifically dismissed defense claims that the men had their feet shackled, noting that the defendants walked to the interview area unassisted. The witness further explained that no suspects asked for legal representation or family presence during the questioning sessions.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik has mandated that the Department of State Services investigate reports that sensitive evidence, including recorded videos, was leaked to social media personality VeryDarkMan. The court is currently weighing the admissibility of these materials while simultaneously addressing pending bail applications from the accused. Following the conclusion of the trial-within-trial, the court plans to resume proceedings on June 25 to allow the defense to present their side, with a final ruling on bail expected on July 20.
