Argentine athlete Lucas Trejo suffered a tragic loss after his wife and two children were killed in the recent massive twin earthquakes that rocked Venezuela. The news was confirmed on Sunday by his club, the second-division Venezuelan team Sport Maritimo La Guaira.
Trejo, who is 38, was away at a training camp in Caracas when the powerful 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude tremors hit on Wednesday night. Upon rushing back to his home in La Guaira, the region most severely affected by the disaster, he discovered his apartment building had been completely destroyed. According to his brother-in-law, Ricardo Ardiles, Trejo spent three grueling days searching through the debris before emergency teams recovered the bodies of his wife, Yanina, and his two children, Aaron and Ainhoa.
Official reports indicate that the death toll from the catastrophe has reached nearly 1,500 people, with tens of thousands of individuals still missing.
