The family of Nigeria’s inaugural military ruler, General Aguiyi-Ironsi, is seeking both a formal apology and financial restitution from the federal government regarding his 1966 assassination. Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi, the nephew of the late general and current family representative, voiced these demands during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time segment this past Thursday.
He characterized his uncle as a visionary and fair-minded leader, noting that his tenure lasted a mere six months before his life was cut short. The family maintains that there has been no genuine expression of remorse from the state for the death of a man they argue was innocent of any wrongdoing. According to his nephew, the general’s only fault was holding the most senior rank when he was asked to stabilize the nation following the initial coup.
The family representative emphasized that General Aguiyi-Ironsi did not participate in the insurrection but rather accepted a duty to serve his country. He argued that the time has come for the government to provide reconciliation, compensation, and a sincere acknowledgment of the loss. General Aguiyi-Ironsi had assumed leadership after the 1966 uprising effectively dismantled Nigeria’s parliamentary system, an event that also resulted in the deaths of Prime Minister Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and several other high-ranking military officials.
