The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has announced a N500,000 fine for any student caught driving dangerously on or near campus following their final exams. Registrar Ambrose Ugwu announced the policy on Thursday to prevent accidents often caused by celebratory driving.
Ugwu stated that students are expected to depart the campus peacefully once their papers are finished. Any vehicle seized due to this behavior will only be released after the fine is paid. This rule takes effect on July 31. The university is implementing this in accordance with a resolution from the Enugu State House of Assembly and a directive from the state commissioner for education issued in late 2024.
Beyond the financial penalty, students who violate these rules will face further disciplinary action. The university has directed all deans and heads of departments to inform students of these expectations. Additionally, security personnel have been instructed to monitor the campus strictly to ensure safety and compliance.
