The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has commanded the Ministry of Transport to strengthen enforcement measures against illegal motor parks throughout the Abakaliki capital. This instruction came during an official oversight visit by the House Committee on Works and Transport.
Hon. Deacon Joseph Ununu, the committee chairman, stated that these unauthorized parks are disrupting urban beautification projects and negatively impacting the state’s ability to collect revenue. He called for an immediate end to informal roadside loading and unloading, insisting that all commercial transport operations must utilize official terminals.
Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Emeka Igboke, identified four authorized locations: Akanu Ibiam Park, Ezeogo Igboke Ewa Central Park, EBOTRANS Park, and Ishieke Park. The Commissioner confirmed that an inter-ministerial task force is actively working to dismantle illegal operations. Additionally, the ministry has launched an identification program for traffic personnel to prevent extortion and is currently planning the installation of new traffic signals across the city.
Committee members expressed their support for the ministry’s mission, noting the importance of effective oversight of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers. The legislative body also acknowledged the Commissioner’s previous successes in decreasing traffic incidents across Ebonyi State.
