Residents with disabilities in Ebonyi State organized a peaceful protest in Abakaliki to voice their frustration over perceived governmental abandonment. They urged the administration to provide monthly financial support, implement welfare initiatives, and sign the previously passed Disability Bill into law.
A primary point of contention involves an eviction notice from the Commissioners of Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma, and Women Affairs, Barrister Felicia Nwamkpuma, which mandates that the group vacate their current office space. Comrade Nwovu Friday, leader of the local disability association, stated that they have used this site for a decade and criticized the lack of consultation regarding this displacement.
While advocating for their inclusion in political appointments and government schemes, the demonstrators pledged their continued support for Governor Francis Nwifuru’s leadership looking toward the 2027 elections. They specifically requested that the governor step in to resolve their housing and welfare grievances.
Professor Emmanuel Echiegu, Chief of Staff to the Governor, addressed the group by confirming that the Disability Bill is currently moving toward final approval. He highlighted that the state has already registered more than 300 individuals in the health insurance program to ensure access to free medical care. The government has committed to hosting follow-up meetings to resolve the specific accommodation issues raised by the organization.
