Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has stated that the United Kingdom should remain unfazed by aggressive rhetoric from Iran. Although the Iranian regime recently identified the UK as a potential target due to its support for US and Israeli operations, Streeting advised against overreacting to these warnings.
The UK maintains a clear policy of only participating in defensive missions from British bases and refuses to engage in offensive military strikes against Iran. Streeting reaffirmed that while the UK is fully aligned with the US regarding maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, they diverge on direct offensive military involvement. He plans to meet with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth soon to align their strategies and discuss a potential naval mission to clear mines from the strait.
Addressing the broader security landscape, Streeting also characterized recent Russian military exercises in the English Channel as performative and unprofessional. He noted that the government actively counters Russian aggression daily, despite public awareness of these efforts being limited.
