During the combined convocation ceremony at Adeleke University in Ede, Osun State, Dr. Deji Adeleke voiced significant alarm regarding the state of Nigeria’s democracy. He argued that widespread electoral fraud and a lack of respect for the rule of law are actively driving away potential investors. According to Adeleke, this erosion of confidence leads to higher unemployment and fuels the mass departure of young citizens seeking stability elsewhere.
Addressing the graduates, the businessman specifically highlighted the integrity issues surrounding election staff. He noted that with thousands of polling units, the Independent National Electoral Commission relies on temporary staff to manage results, yet he claims these individuals often accept bribes to alter tallies. He specifically pointed to National Youth Service Corps members and certain police officers as participants in this misconduct.
Adeleke encouraged students to reject corruption and prioritize honesty to help build a nation that invites investment. He also expressed sorrow over the poor treatment of Nigerians abroad, attributing this hostility to the lack of viable economic opportunities within the country. During the same event, Vice-Chancellor Professor Solomon Adebola reported that the university graduated 1,375 students, including 160 first-class honorees, and announced the addition of medical and pharmacy programs to the curriculum.
