The Lagos State wing of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally denounced FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for his recent disparaging comments regarding High Chief Olabode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the party. Through a statement released by spokesperson Prince Dr. Christopher Odianarewo, the party accused Wike of manipulating historical facts to diminish George’s role within the organization.
The tension stems from August 8, 2026, when Wike, represented by his aide Lere Olayinka, claimed he had no regrets about blocking George’s bid for the national chairmanship. Odianarewo refuted this account, stating that George withdrew his candidacy voluntarily to support party unity and established zoning principles. He further challenged Wike’s narrative, questioning why the minister would visit George at his Abuja home if he truly considered him irrelevant.
Addressing claims about the party’s electoral performance in Lagos, Odianarewo labeled assertions that the PDP vanished after 1999 as false propaganda. He noted that the party has consistently secured legislative and council seats throughout the years. Additionally, the party dismissed the focus on polling unit results, arguing that true leadership extends beyond single-unit statistics. Regarding the 2027 gubernatorial candidate Deji Doherty, the Lagos PDP asserted that they would remain focused on their internal structures rather than external meddling.
Ultimately, the Lagos PDP urged Wike to concentrate on his official duties in the Federal Capital Territory instead of attempting to interfere with local party dynamics. They insisted that George’s political stature does not require validation from Wike and cautioned against applying a different regional political style to Lagos, declaring that the political climate of Lagos is distinct from that of Rivers State.
