Professor Chidi Odinkalu, the former head of the National Human Rights Commission, remarked that the imprisonment of ex-Code of Conduct Tribunal Chairman Danladi Umar, former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, and former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai illustrates how temporary political influence truly is.
Writing on his social media platform this Thursday, Odinkalu noted that in early 2023, few observers would have considered it plausible that these three high-profile individuals would end up in state-sanctioned custody. He emphasized that endorsing unfair treatment against rivals establishes a dangerous standard that often ends up impacting the perpetrators themselves later on.
Odinkalu cautioned that those currently misusing their authority should remember that no situation lasts forever. He warned that the patterns of injustice people celebrate when directed at their adversaries frequently return to entrap those who supported them initially.
