Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who leads the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission, has expressed his approval of President Bola Tinubu’s recent decision to boost military salaries. Kalu noted that this move illustrates the government’s dedication to the well-being of the individuals who protect Nigeria’s borders.
The President’s plan involves pay raises ranging from 30 to 80 percent, set to begin on September 1. This adjustment will affect approximately 250,000 members across the Army, Navy, and Air Force, adding roughly ₦264 billion to the national wage expenditure.
In a public statement, the former governor of Abia State remarked that prioritizing the welfare of soldiers is both a moral duty and a vital investment in national security. He highlighted the significant dangers soldiers face, including terrorism and kidnapping, and emphasized that better support will enhance their operational readiness.
Kalu also addressed the members of the armed forces, asking them to honor the government’s investment by maintaining professional standards and respecting human rights. He asserted that a secure nation is essential for economic prosperity and development, expressing hope that the salary increase will bolster troop morale across the country.
