Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong, the Plateau State Commissioner for Health, announced on Monday that the region has seen 441 suspected cases of cholera, with 14 resulting in death and 26 laboratory-confirmed infections. The outbreak, which surfaced in June 2026, has primarily affected Mangu, Jos North, Jos South, and Barkin Ladi local government areas.
In response, the Ministry of Health has heightened emergency protocols. The state is collaborating with local councils, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), and various partners to manage the situation. Awareness campaigns are currently being broadcast via media channels and through engagement with religious and traditional community leaders.
Public health teams have escalated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives, such as disinfecting water sources and providing sanitation education directly to households. Residents are strongly advised to drink only treated water, maintain high standards of personal hygiene, and avoid open defecation. Those exhibiting symptoms like vomiting or sudden watery diarrhea are encouraged to visit a clinic immediately, while healthcare providers have been instructed to report suspected cases to the authorities without delay.
