The inaugural Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann held in Belfast concluded early Monday morning, with organizers reporting an overwhelmingly positive reception from all local communities. Estimates suggest over one million visitors attended the festivities during the eight-day event, with thousands gathering at Belfast City Hall for the final proceedings.
Niall McClean, co-chair of the organizing committee, praised the historic nature of the gathering, noting that the city successfully unified diverse groups through music and celebration. Dr. Labhrás Ó Murchú, director general of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, characterized the festival as a miraculous achievement, highlighting the atmosphere of friendship and creativity that permeated the week. Lord Mayor Róis-Máire Donnelly described the event as a watershed moment that showcased the city’s potential, while John Walsh, Chief Executive of Belfast City Council, emphasized that the collaboration behind the festival will remain a memorable landmark for the city.
Following the massive turnout, there have been discussions regarding the potential for permanent pedestrianisation in Belfast city centre. Supporters, including Alliance Party representatives and Green Party councillor Brian Smyth, argue that the city’s accessibility during the festival demonstrated the benefits of prioritizing foot traffic. However, disability advocacy groups, such as Disabled People Against Cuts Northern Ireland, have raised concerns. Spokesperson Dermot Devlin warned that changes to city infrastructure must prioritize inclusivity to ensure that individuals with limited mobility are not excluded from essential access.
As the city looks forward, plans are already underway for the festival’s return to Belfast from August 1 to 8, 2027.
