Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has characterized President Bola Tinubu as an individual struggling to maintain power, using performative hostility to hide administrative shortcomings. This criticism stems from the President’s recent claim that he would wrestle his political rivals to the ground.
In a statement released by his aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku argued that the President’s aggressive language is a desperate attempt to shift focus away from his poor governance. He noted that such comments, made in response to a plea for peace from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, displayed a lack of the humility and decorum expected of a leader during serious national discourse.
Atiku advised the President to stop focusing on political fights and instead confront the nation’s severe economic crisis, including inflation, food insecurity, and the devaluation of the naira. He stressed that empty political posturing cannot satisfy the needs of suffering citizens.
Furthermore, Atiku asserted that Tinubu’s primary challenge is not his political opposition, but his own performance record. He concluded that voters would use the 2027 elections to deliver a verdict on the current state of the nation, rather than engaging in the metaphorical wrestling match proposed by the President.
