President Bola Tinubu stated that the foundational values of integrity, discipline, and selfless service championed by former President Muhammadu Buhari will serve as a long-term inspiration for the nation. Representing the President at a memorial marking the first anniversary of Buhari’s death in Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima lauded the late leader as a devoted patriot who prioritized national advancement throughout his life.
Tinubu noted that Buhari retains significant respect from the populace, encouraging citizens to adopt the core principles he championed. During the event, the President remarked that the nation remains deeply influenced by the life Buhari led, emphasizing their shared political history and common goal of fostering a prosperous, unified, and peaceful Nigeria. Tinubu highlighted Buhari’s total commitment to the country, specifically pointing to his bravery and dedication to democratic constitutionalism.
Highlighting his unique career, the President noted that Buhari was among the rare individuals to lead the nation both as a military head of state and a democratically elected president. He underscored that the late leader’s reputation was cemented through character and public duty instead of a search for personal acclaim. Tinubu extended his condolences to the Buhari family, promising continued government support while urging associates to perpetuate his legacy of honesty and simplicity.
General Yakubu Gowon, a former Head of State, also offered praise, remembering his time serving alongside Buhari in the military. Gowon characterized him as a courageous soldier dedicated to keeping the country together and acknowledged that Buhari’s partnership with Tinubu was the turning point that secured his victory in the 2015 presidential election.
