Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff, has cautioned Nigerian Army personnel against the use of illicit substances, emphasizing that maintaining good mental health is vital for successful military operations. Represented by Maj.-Gen. John Lar, the Commander of Army Headquarters Garrison, Shaibu spoke during a four-day seminar in Doma, Nasarawa State. He stressed that Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder should be treated as a battle-related injury rather than a sign of personal failing, promising that the military will provide the support and counseling necessary for recovery.
Addressing the dangers of narcotics, Shaibu explicitly stated that drug abuse compromises unit unity and combat readiness. He directed commanders to actively eradicate this behavior from all barracks. The event, held at the 4 Special Forces Headquarters, was titled “Transformational Leadership, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Drugs/Substance Abuse.” It aimed to enhance leadership skills, inspire personnel, and help officers navigate complex security challenges by fostering mentorship and deep care for subordinates.
Maj.-Gen. Peter Okoye, the Chief of Transformation and Innovation, noted that the seminar supports the goal of creating a more professional and resilient force. He highlighted that the efficacy of the Nigerian Army depends heavily on the psychological strength and discipline of its members as they confront current national security threats.
