The African Democratic Congress (ADC) recently stated that the Nigerian electorate, rather than former President Olusegun Obasanjo, will determine the result of the 2027 presidential election. The opposition party claims the All Progressives Congress (APC) is using attacks against candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as a distraction from the current administration’s struggles with the economy, security, and inflation.
National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi noted that the ruling party has grown desperate following criticisms from Catholic Bishops regarding the state of the nation. Instead of addressing these concerns, the APC has focused on Olusegun Obasanjo’s personal remarks about Atiku. The ADC argues that the ruling party frequently attacks its critics to avoid discussing its own poor performance over the past three years.
Regarding Obasanjo’s comments, the ADC emphasized that while the former leader has the right to his opinion, it cannot rewrite the economic history of the period when Atiku Abubakar served as Vice President. During that time, the nation saw more stable macroeconomic conditions and lower costs of living than those seen under the current government.
The ADC challenged the federal government to explain the surge in poverty, the lack of job creation despite claims of growth, the rising national debt, and the persistent threat of terrorism and kidnappings. The party concluded that the 2027 election will not be defined by political figures or individual opinions, but by the daily hardships and lived experiences of over 200 million Nigerians.
