FCT Minister Nyesom Wike stated on Tuesday that he refuses to be swayed or pressured by attempts to blackmail him while he executes his official responsibilities. The minister issued these remarks while addressing criticism from figures including African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore regarding the recent closure of Jabi Recreational Park.
During a media session in Abuja, Wike explained that the park project was originally commissioned 15 years ago but failed to reach fruition under prior administrations. He described the site as being neglected and overtaken by shanties and unauthorized food vendors, which prompted his decision to revoke the initial development contract. Wike emphasized that despite public backlash and accusations regarding land seizure, he remains committed to ensuring the area is properly developed.
Addressing his detractors, Wike dismissed the claims of activists like Sowore, asserting that their criticisms were unfounded. He maintained that the government must collaborate with private entities to revitalize the space, as the site had become overgrown with weeds and unsuitable for public recreation. Wike reiterated that his primary objective is the orderly development of the city regardless of outside interference.
