The Abia State Government, led by Governor Alex Otti, has greenlit a plan to build six state-of-the-art greenhouses throughout the state’s three senatorial zones. Information Commissioner Prince Okey Kanu explained that these facilities will enable consistent, year-round vegetable farming by controlling environmental conditions. This initiative aligns with broader goals to improve food security and modernize local farming practices.
Furthermore, the state is establishing a committee to oversee the Nigeria Agri-Business and Agro-Industrial Development Initiative. This federal-state partnership aims to boost the region’s economy through improved agro-processing and value-added production. In the commerce sector, the upcoming third Aba International Trade Fair will focus on business networking and industrial innovation.
To support local businesses, the government is collaborating with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria to help entrepreneurs achieve export certification, aiming to curb counterfeit goods and increase the global reach of products from Aba. Regarding public infrastructure, authorities are managing 26 road contracts and 46 direct labor projects, including essential maintenance on the federal Opobo Junction–Azumini–Obehie Road.
Urban renewal remains a priority, with the Umuahia Capital Development Authority conducting drainage clearing to prevent flooding in areas like Asaba Street and Ndume Road. Additionally, officials are evaluating markets like Ogwumabiri for potential relocation or redesign to better fit the city’s modern layout. Finally, erosion control measures have been approved for Emede Ibeku, and construction continues at the Green City Site and Services Estate in Ukwa West.
