On Friday, reports surfaced regarding an assault on a female physician at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital in Kwara State. The incident involved the father of a two-year-old boy who passed away in the pediatric emergency unit on Wednesday.
Investigations indicate that the father, Emmanuel Olatunji, left his ailing son in the care of the mother and remained absent for two hours. He failed to provide the necessary funds for the child’s admission materials. To prevent a delay in life-saving care, the physician personally paid for the admission pack.
Tragically, the child died despite medical intervention. Upon returning and discovering his son had passed away, Olatunji physically attacked the doctor. He has since been arrested, and the physician is currently receiving medical care. This event triggered a five-day strike by doctors at the facility beginning Wednesday, during which time at least four other patients have died. On Thursday, medical staff organized a protest to demand justice and call for an end to such violence. As of Friday, hospital leadership had not commented on the situation.
