Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has addressed recent reports regarding his position on President Bola Tinubu’s potential second term, noting that he does not oppose the President exercising his constitutional rights. He emphasized that the ultimate decision for the 2027 election remains with the Nigerian public. Otti’s remarks followed claims by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma that South-East governors had reached a consensus to support Tinubu’s re-election.
Otti, a member of the Labour Party, stressed that individuals are entitled to their personal political views and that Uzodimma cannot speak on behalf of all regional leaders. He reiterated that while he supports the President’s right to run for office, the electorate will determine the victor at the ballot box. Furthermore, Otti reaffirmed his support for the removal of fuel subsidies, describing the practice as an unsustainable policy that fosters corruption.
Beyond national politics, Governor Otti highlighted significant progress in Abia State. The state has risen to third place in the 2026 Phillips Consulting State Performance Index. Additionally, Abia currently leads the nation in maternal and infant health outcomes, with a majority of its primary healthcare centers now operational. To bolster transportation, the government has added 20 electric buses to its fleet, equipped with surveillance technology to ensure accountability.
The governor also noted advancements in land administration, citing the issuance of over 4,900 Certificates of Occupancy and a new partnership with UN-Habitat to digitize land records. Major infrastructure projects, including smart schools, market remodeling, and the Aba Bus Terminal, are moving forward despite delays caused by the rainy season. Otti concluded by expressing confidence in his administration’s ongoing reforms and his commitment to the state’s long-term development.
