Canadians Cancel Summer Trips To U.S. Amid Trump’s Annexation And Tariff Threats
A significant number of Canadians are reevaluating their travel plans to the United States this summer, primarily due to President Donald Trump’s recent annexation and tariff threats.
Traditionally, the U.S. has been a favored destination for Canadian tourists, with approximately 20.4 million visits last year, generating around US$20.5 billion and supporting 140,000 American jobs. However, current political tensions have led to a noticeable decline in Canadian tourism to the U.S.
A recent Abacus Data survey indicates that 62% of Canadians plan to avoid U.S. travel for at least the next year due to these political issues. This sentiment is reflected in travel patterns; for instance, in February alone, there was a 13% decrease in air travel and a 23% decrease in land-border crossings by Canadians compared to the previous year.
Airlines have responded to this shift by adjusting their services. WestJet Airlines, for example, has noted a trend of Canadians opting for South American destinations over U.S. locales, leading to a reduction in flights to U.S. cities.
Additionally, there are concerns about border detentions and a strong U.S. dollar diminishing Canadians’ purchasing power, further discouraging travel to the United States.
The decline in Canadian visitors poses economic challenges for U.S. regions that rely heavily on tourism. Border cities, in particular, are experiencing reduced hotel bookings and overall tourism revenue. Local initiatives, such as “Buffalo Loves Canada,” are being considered to rebuild trust and encourage Canadian tourists to return.
In summary, escalating political tensions and economic policies have led many Canadians to reconsider their travel plans to the U.S., opting instead for domestic or alternative international destinations. This trend not only reflects the current strained relations but also signals potential economic repercussions for the U.S. tourism industry.
