Senate Approves Ndidi Nwakuche As Comptroller General Of Nigerian Correctional Service
The Senate has approved the appointment of Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche as the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
The confirmation was made on Tuesday after the Senate Committee on Interior, led by Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North), presented and reviewed its report.
Presenting the report, Oshiomhole stated, “The Senate do receive and consider the report of the Committee on Interior on the confirmation of the nomination of Nwakuche, Sylvester Ndidi mni, MFR for appointment as Controller-General, Nigerian Correctional Service.”
After the confirmation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio called on Nwakuche to focus on strengthening measures to prevent jailbreaks nationwide. “To whom much is given, much is expected. I hope that his appointment will bring an end to jailbreaks,” Akpabio said.
President Bola Tinubu nominated Nwakuche for the position last week and submitted his name to the Senate for confirmation. In a letter read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu stated that the nomination was in accordance with Section 3(1)(b) of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.
“In compliance with Section 3(1)(b) of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Act, 2019, I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Mr. Nwakuche Sylvester Ndidi as Controller-General, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS),” the letter read. “While I hope that the Senate will consider this request in the usual expeditious manner, please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration.”
The nomination was forwarded to the Senate Committee on Interior for legislative review, with instructions to report back within a week, ultimately resulting in Tuesday’s confirmation.
